STCW Proficiency in Medical Care Course (5 Day)

Course Overview

This 5 day course is specifically designed to meet the requirements of Section 1.14 of the STCW code (Medical Care). The course is designed for seafarers designated to take charge of medical care onboard a vessel and for those wishing to qualify for a Certificate of Competency. It takes the student through a broad range of medical topics covering emergency and non-emergency duties. On completion it will give the student the range of skills necessary to manage and treat patients and crew for both serious and non-serious medical and traumatic emergencies. It will train the student in life saving interventions and in procedures for requesting medical assistance and evacuation.

  • Infection prevention and control
  • Patient assessment
  • Intra Muscular injections and pharmacology
  • Medical emergencies
  • Radio messaging
  • Bleeding /Shock and Soft tissue injuries
  • Musculoskeletal¬†and Head injuries
  • Airway management / C.P.R.¬† and use of an A.E.D.
  • Spinal injuries and principles of lifting and moving a patient

There will be practical assessments throughout the course to demonstrate competency as well as a final written multiple choice exam and a practical exercise in a ship module demonstrating extrication from a confined space of a seriously injured patient.

Who Should Attend

Students should normally have completed their Medical First Aid course and have their discharge book and/or photo I.D. They must be in good health and fit to participate fully or in possession of a valid ENG11 certificate.

NOTE: Delegates undergoing firefighting training will be required to complete and sign a confidential medical declaration to disclose any relevant health problems, disabilities or injuries that instructors may need to consider during these physically demanding courses. Therefore it is essential that all candidates attending these courses are fit and physically able to undertake the demanding practical elements of these courses.

In addition, some elements of the Medial First Aid and Medical Care courses may contain a strong practical and exercise element to further enhance instruction and learning.

All our courses are STCW compliant and are approved by the Irish Maritime Administration, Dept. Of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
